Pneuma
Пневма
[NYOO-mah]
Greek: pneuma (breath, spirit, wind) — in Gnostic cosmology, the divine spark or spiritual principle within a human being, as distinct from the psyche (soul) and hyle (matter)
Definition
Pneuma is the divine spark — the highest spiritual principle within a human being in Gnostic cosmology. Distinct from the psyche (soul, the animating principle) and hyle (matter, the body), the Pneuma is the portion of the original Pleroma that became trapped within material existence and which, through Gnosis, can remember its true nature and initiate the return to wholeness.
Deep Understanding
Gnostic anthropology describes human beings as tripartite:
- Hyle — the material body; dense, mortal, shaped by the Demiurge from matter
- Psyche — the animating soul; the level of emotions, desires, will, and personal identity; also shaped substantially by Demiurgic conditioning
- Pneuma — the divine spark; a fragment of the original Pleroma light, present only in pneumatic individuals, which recognizes its true origin through Gnosis
Not all Gnostic texts agree on whether the Pneuma is present in every human being or only in some. The Valentinian school (arguably the most sophisticated Gnostic theological tradition) distinguished three types of humanity: hylic (purely material), psychic (ensouled but not yet spiritually awakened), and pneumatic (those in whom the divine spark is active and recognizable). However, more egalitarian readings of the same texts suggest the Pneuma is latent in all, but activated only through the encounter with Gnosis.
In either case, the Pneuma's essential characteristic is recognition. It does not need to be taught the truth about its nature — it remembers it when triggered by genuine gnosis. The experience of reading a spiritual text and thinking "I already knew this" is the Pneuma activating. The experience of meeting a teacher or a practice and feeling immediately at home in territory you have never consciously visited — this is the Pneuma recognizing what is native to it.
The Archons' primary function, in this framework, is preventing this recognition. Their tool is not force but forgetting — the architecture of distraction, reactive emotion, compulsive desire, and identification with the material and psychic levels that keeps the Pneuma from recognizing itself. Every time consciousness is consumed by drama, fear, craving, or resentment, the Pneuma's signal is drowned out by psychic noise.
Gnosis — direct, experiential knowing — is the counter-mechanism. And Active Imagination is one of the most precise methods for creating the conditions in which the Pneuma can speak from beneath the psychic layers that ordinarily suppress it.
In Jungian terms, the Pneuma corresponds to the Self (the archetype of totality and the deepest organizing center of the psyche) as distinct from the ego (the conscious executive function). The Shadow, Anima, and Animus are psyche-level structures. The Anthropos/Self touches the Pneuma level. The deepest Active Imagination encounters — those that produce genuine transformation rather than interesting inner theater — are encounters at the pneumatic level.
In Practice
The Pneuma cannot be manufactured, performed, or optimized into. It is what you already are when the psychic noise subsides. Practices that reliably create the conditions for pneumatic recognition: sustained silent meditation that outlasts the ego's rehearsed stories, Active Imagination practiced with genuine material and genuine engagement, dream work that moves beyond analysis into direct relationship with what arises, and the specific kind of encounter with primary source texts (Nag Hammadi, Corpus Hermeticum) that creates recognition rather than mere information-transfer. The felt signature of pneumatic contact is certainty that carries no defensiveness — the knowing that doesn't need to be argued because it simply is.
In Pleroma's Words
"The Pneuma is the part of you that arrived here already knowing. Before the first conditioning, before the first verdict about which parts of you were acceptable — something in you was present, aware, luminous, and sourced from somewhere the Demiurge cannot reach. That part never went anywhere. It only got buried under centuries of noise. Gnosis is not adding information to your mind. It is removing the noise until that original signal is audible again."
