Definition
Digital physics is the theoretical framework proposing that the universe is fundamentally computational — that physical reality emerges from information processing rather than from continuous matter and energy. Physicist John Wheeler summarized this as "it from bit": every particle, force, and physical constant derives from information. If the universe is information, the simulation question becomes almost semantic.
Deep Understanding
The digital physics hypothesis represents the latest iteration of a lineage stretching back through Bohm's holographic universe, Plato's realm of Forms, and the Hermetic principle of Mentalism ("The All is Mind"). Each framework asserts the same structural claim from a different vocabulary: the fundamental substance of reality is not matter but information, pattern, or consciousness.
Wheeler's "it from bit" principle (1989) states that every physical quantity derives its meaning from information — binary choices, yes-or-no answers. Physicists Konrad Zuse, Ed Fredkin, and Stephen Wolfram independently proposed that the universe operates on discrete computational rules, like a cellular automaton. If true, the laws of physics are not properties of matter but algorithms — rules executing on a substrate we cannot directly observe.
The Gnostic parallel is the Logos — the divine intelligence that orders and structures reality. If physical laws are algorithms, the Logos is the programmer. The Demiurge, in this framework, is not a deity but a limited set of rules mistaking itself for the complete system.

Notice the rule-based nature of your own experience. Emotional patterns repeat with algorithmic precision: the same triggers produce the same responses, the same relationship dynamics recur with different people, the same fears generate the same avoidance behaviors. These are not random — they are computational. By observing the algorithm, you begin to distinguish between the program and the awareness running it. This observation is the beginning of Gnosis in computational terms: root access to your own operating system.
