Healing Crisis
Лечебна Криза
[HEE-ling KRY-sis]
From naturopathic medicine: the temporary worsening of symptoms that signals deep healing has begun; related to the Greek krisis — turning point, decision
Definition
A healing crisis is the intensification of symptoms, emotions, or life disruptions that occurs when deep healing processes are activated — the necessary turbulence that accompanies genuine transformation. In astrological terms, major transits like the Chiron Return often trigger healing crises as buried wounds surface for conscious integration.
Deep Understanding
The healing crisis is counterintuitive: things get worse precisely because they are getting better. When the psyche begins to release long-held wounds, the stored pain must surface before it can dissipate. In alchemical terms, this is the nigredo — the blackening phase where the old form dissolves into chaos before the new form can crystallize.
Jung recognized this pattern in the individuation process: the confrontation with the Shadow often produces a temporary regression, a period of confusion and heightened vulnerability, before the personality reorganizes at a higher level of integration. Marie-Louise von Franz noted that patients often experienced their worst symptoms immediately before breakthroughs.
In the context of Chiron transits, the healing crisis manifests as the return of old emotional patterns, the failure of established coping mechanisms, and the surfacing of wounds that the individual believed were resolved. This is not regression — it is the deepening of the healing spiral, revisiting the wound at a level that was previously inaccessible.
In Practice
When experiencing a healing crisis — whether triggered by a transit, therapy, or spiritual practice — resist the urge to retreat into old defenses. The crisis is a sign that the process is working, not failing. Ground yourself physically (movement, breath, nature), maintain your daily practices, and seek support from someone who understands that getting worse before getting better is the structure of genuine transformation, not a sign that something has gone wrong.
In The Architect's Words
The healing crisis is the alchemical fire. It does not destroy — it purifies. The only way out is through.
